The firm Azienda Agricola Lombardo founded in 1972 by the father of the current owners Francesco and Giacinto Lombardo is a farm located in a lovely spot on the hills overlooking Montepulciano. The firm, the firm, fin the last years, is crossing a period of big renewal, both for the vineyards and for the oenological organization. On the agricultural front have been acquired new lands, where have been installed 10 vineyard's hectars, 9 of which destined to the production of the Noble Wine of Montepulciano; in cellar has been completed the whole substitution of the barrels. Specialized vineyards, over 30 Ha., are splitted in different spots like Caggiole, Confino and Gracciano where is also placed the farm's head office. Soils are, of course, different ranging from light tufa at Caggiole where elegant, non-tannic, scented wines are produced and in the more clayey Confino and Gracciano production of stronger wines, somewhat tannic to be "tamed" in the cellar using suitable barrels. The farm's owners have clearly distinct duties: Francesco supported by the oenologist Dr. Paolo Lucherini is supervising the oenological side as well as commercial matters, while the brother Giacinto is in charge of the vineyards. Cellars are situated in Via Lazio where is located the wine-making department provided with tanks for a total capacity of 3.500 hl. and in Via Umbria, in the undergrounds of the eighteenth-century villa, where the historical aging wine cellars have been restored, widened and directly connected to the upper floor tasting room. In the underground at a uniform temperature the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. mellows in the new French Allier casks and Slavonian casks with a capacity of 1.000 hl.Some tonneaux (double barrique) French Allier oak casks, and oak mixture Ybbs (Austria) plus Allier containers have been added as they will transfer more interesting tannins. French tonneaux, only Allier, are appointed to the ripnes of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG Riserva while the oak mixture supplyed end of 2001 is employed to the new wine of the Azienda Agricola Lombardo the Supertuscan "Confino" (70% Prugnolo Gentile - 30% Cabernet Sauvignon). In the wine-making area some wine makers have been brought and added to vetrified cement tanks both conditioned for a better check of the tumoltuos working fermentation (cold) and malolactic fermentation (hot). Works are going on in the increased fermentation area plus other wine makers will be bought and the new premises related to bottling, refinement in bottles and the new commercial area. Besides that the new underground cellar, the Cantine Storiche in Via Umbria are now considered below need, are related to the increased area of our firm.
The products The grapes carefull selected on harvest are softly pressed and de-stalked (within 2000 we bought a new grapes-pressing with adjustable rubber rollers) then wine pressed will work around eight days for not aged wines like Chianti Colli Senesi D.O.C.G. and around fifteen days powerful wines like Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. with frequent reassembling in the first days. Malolactic fermentation takes place within November. Besides Montepulciano's chief wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the Lombardo family also produce Rosso di Montepulciano D.O.C., Chianti Colli Senesi D.O.C.G., white table wine "La Pergola", Vinsanto di Montepulciano D.O.C., Grappa Nobile, Olio extravergine d'Oliva plus the new I.G.T Confino.
