Casa Lemmi

Directly in front of the Collegiata Church of San Quirico D’Orcia stands “Casa Lemmi”, inhabited for over a millennium and originally Norman, once the refuge of the Knights Templar, Imperial residence, a guest house, convent, fortified house, and for at least three hundred years, the home of the owner of a nearby estate in the Val D’Orcia.

The rooms open off a stairwell which rises towards a bright, sunny dome. The stairwell was originally Romanesque but has been altered many times over the course of time until it gained its present appearance in the nineteenth century and through the window, the guest’s eye is first attracted by the twelfth century Collegiata Church and then by the view of Mount Amiata which dominates one side of the Val D’Orcia, recently World Heritage listed by UNESCO, and on the other side, towards the Maremma and the sea where Mount Argentario towers over a landscape of Mediterranean scrubland. The presence of numerous thermal springs adds further variety to the landscape. Within the walls of “Casa Lemmi”, antiquity, comfort and convenience together weave a subtle magic which remains forever in the memory of the visitor, tempting them to return again and again.
