On Saturday 20th April the newly-restored Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni in Piazza Grande was presented to the citizens of Montepulciano. The well is one of the town’s most beautiful Renaissance monuments and the restoration was made possible jointly by the Consorzio del Vino Nobile and the Town Council, with the help of the Superintendence of Architectural Heritage and the Landscape of the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The event opened with a greeting from the Mayor, Signor Piero Di Betto, and from the Chairman of the Consortium, Alamanno Contucci, in the Sala Consiliare inside Palazzo Comunale.
This was followed by two interesting speeches by Dott. Duccio Pasqui and architect Massimo Bertone, after which visual documentation of the various restoration phases was shown. The participants then went into Piazza Grande for the presentation of this beautiful restored monument, a new plaque at its feet commemorating the work.
Musical accompaniment for the presentation was provided by the band of the Musical Institute of Montepulciano. The event concluded at the Consortium Wine Shop with a toast – naturally with the excellent 1999 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
