VERSILIA Running along the coast between the beautiful Bay of Poets and the bustling port of Pisa is a stretch of golden beach called the Versilian Coast, where the HOTEL EXCELSIOR lays. With the richly varigated landscape of the Apuan Alps as a picturesque backdrop, a string of small sleepy towns face the sea and the wide sweep of fine sand that even at its busiest time is never overcrowded. The food in the area is fabulous, ranging from the local seafood offerings of a simple rustic trattoria to the sophisticated menus of our restaurant IL SESTANTE. APUN ALPES The HOTEL EXCELSIOR is situated 10 kms. far from the Apuan Alps. They are harsh mountains with steep slopes which rise up 2,000 metres, forming a bulwark. They are distinctly alpine in appearance yet they reflect in the sea which lies just a few kilometres away as the crow flies. These mountains, which have been praised by poets such as Dante and D'Annunzio, are the result of a unique geological evolution which led to the formation of the most important deposit of marble in the world in and around Carrara. This deposit has been exploited since Roman times and is where Michelangelo found the raw material for his most famous works. Above all, though, the Apuan Alps have an enviable wealth of naturalistic elements which are protected by the institution of a Natural Park: from a flora rich in endemisms, signs of the climate in the past, to one of the deepest karst complexes in Europe, from the characteristic shapes of the Alpine landscape, the undisputed domain of the Royal Eagle, to the soft wooded slopes typical of more central Tuscany. There are many ancient villages and hamlets which stand as silent reminders of the history and culture of the Tuscan population, where the pace of life still resembles that of times gone by. ARTISTIC PLACES The HOTEL EXCELSIOR is located in an extraordinary land, unique in the world, provoking interest and wonder all the time. A place where signs of history are manifest, where past and future melt respecting the environment. Florence (100 kms), Pisa (50 kms), Lucca (40 kms), cities of handsome and imposing buildings, many of them erected during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. LE CINQUE TERRE Cinque Terre is the name given to that part of the eastern coast of Liguria around the five small towns of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. It takes about five hours to walk from the first to the last of the five towns, but, as they are also linked by rail, the journey can easily be broken into stages.
